“On a beautiful late spring afternoon fifteen years ago, two young people graduated from the same college. They were alike – top notch degrees from a prestigious institution, ambitious and full of spunk. Recently, they attended their 15th college reunion.

They had much in common. Both were happily married. Both had two children. And both had started their careers strong, moved around a bit and are gainfully employed. They were enjoying the reunion until they found a difference… a BIG difference. One was a manager of a small department making an average salary. The other was the CEO of a company, earning five times as much, and owned millions in stock and stock options. It wasn’t just about the money… it was also about growth, range of responsibilities, position, power, influence, achievement, family harmony…

They say comparison is the thief of joy- but we just can’t help ourselves, can we?

When you look at people earning more, living better, leading the kind of life you know that you should be leading- do you wonder, ”Why not me?” or “What did I do wrong?”


I am an MIT alum who wondered too, as to what makes this kind of difference in people’s lives? Why do smart people with the same education achieve vastly different levels of success?

After 10 years of digging, I found that it is NOT native intelligence or talent or dedication. It isn’t that one person wants success and the other does not. I found 16 factors that influence the success of highly intelligent people. During this masterclass, I will share those factors with you, provide game-changing insights as to why this happens, and how each one of you can become more successful. No fluff, straight talk (MIT style)!

Many people consider themselves ‘smart’. ‘Thinking and feeling smart’ could come from a high IQ, an elite education or achievements. we have found that it also brings 16 psychological factors into play – the “Smartness Factors”. Each of these factors could either be enablers or disablers, depending on the individual. For example, an enabling behavior on factor could be that you recognize your strengths and weaknesses, and team with others who complement you. On the other hand, a disabling behavior could be that you refuse to delegate to others, insisting on doing everything by yourself. There are fifteen other such factors.

  1. Many individuals have enablers that they are unaware of, or take for granted. Identifying your enablers and leveraging them could make you much more successful. But, do you know your enablers?
  2. Similarly, individuals have disablers, some they know about, and some they are unaware of. Identifying your disablers and mitigating them could make you much more successful. But, do you know your disablers?
  3. Particularly after we complete our formal education, and during our mid and late careers, our disablers prevent our greater success MORE than our enablers help us become more successful. This is a very important insight he gained from studying hundreds of people.

I graduated from MIT and did not achieve the sustained success I thought I deserved.

Both my parents were high school teachers, and we were told to focus on education. Dad was the first graduate in his entire family EVER. He got two bachelor’s degrees and one master’s degree. Mom was the first woman who graduated from college on my father’s side of the family. She went on to get two bachelor’s degrees, and then got a master’s degree at the age of 76! Between my two sisters and our spouses, we have 14 master’s degrees. Our family values education.

I was the first in the family to travel overseas and graduate from an elite institution like MIT. To my father and many family and friends, I could do no wrong. When I figured I needed some help, I had nobody to turn to. I was surrounded by people who thought I needed no help! I had to look outside the family for  role models, coaches and mentors – and for answers for ‘what was holding me back’.

Are you surrounded by people who think you need no help?

Would you rather fail than let anybody else know you need help?

Yes on both counts? I’ve been in your shoes.

I’ve had some big highs and big lows. When a business I had started collapsed, I wondered why. I tapped into my network and reached out to others.

I became a voracious reader, watched numerous videos, attended conferences and personal development classes,… and made some progress. I found many of the ‘gurus’ teaching the theory of success, but few helped me implement the theory. Many of the ‘gurus’ and attendees were in awe at my ‘smartness’… they were not the ‘truth tellers’.

Smart people have blind spots too – we tend to see what we want to see; and  surround ourselves with people who constantly remind us of how smart we are (and we often ignore/avoid the ‘truth tellers’). Pretty soon, WE END UP LIVING IN A “I AM SMART” BUBBLE… and descend into a negative spiral of mediocrity.

One day, I was with Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, my friend and mentor, at his apartment in Manhattan. I was telling him that something was preventing my greater success. He suggested that I interview other immigrants like myself and see if there was a difference between the achievers and the non-achievers. He also encouraged me to introspect. So, I interviewed over a hundred achievers and non-achievers – from recent graduates to Nobel Prize winners and CEOs of companies. These included people who were successful (and not), by their own measures. And, I interviewed people who were actually making lots of money and wealthy people, researched it in great detail, read numerous books and articles, watched videos, and gave it some deep thought. I found that there are stark differences between achievers & non-achievers. The achievers:

1. were highly self-aware of their enablers & disablers.
2. lead intentional lives.
3. had a support group consisting of other achievers – people on a similar quest

4. had truth-tellers they listened to.

I also noticed that certain factors show up with ‘smart’ people. Those are the 16 factors I mentioned earlier, and the assessment helps to pinpoint whether the factors are enabling or disabling you at this point in time.

I have spoken about my learnings at several elite institutions, and to alumni of several of those elite schools. At one event, while speaking to alumni of a top 5 school, I added a sub-title to my talk – WHY MANY SMART PEOPLE ARE NOT AS SUCCESSFUL AS THEY THINK THEY SHOULD BE. There were FIVE TIMES the expected number of attendees. I knew then… that my challenges were NOT UNIQUE. There are many ‘smart’ people who are trying to figure out how they can be more successful.

I had figured out a few things on my own and had developed a long list of reasons. I then hired two psychologists to help me make sense of it. They boiled that long list of reasons down to 16 psychological factors that recurred, and each individual either used them in enabling or disabling ways. They either enabled them to become more successful, or prevented their greater success.

We put together an assessment to validate the correlation between certain COMMON BEHAVIORS OF SOME CERTAIN SMART PEOPLE AND SUCCESS (or lack of success). When you take that assessment, it will tell you which of those 16 factors are enablers, and which of those are disablers for you. 

Once I help you identify your disablers, I can help you mitigate them. It is like trying to run a 100-meter sprint with a ball and chain around your ankle. I will help you get rid of the ball and chain – you will immediately be able to ‘run faster’.

I wish I had somebody who pointed out my enablers and disablers and guided me to leverage my enablers and mitigate my disablers. I figured those out on my own decades later.
